Belgian coach Sofie Gierts is ready to take charge of the SG Pipers women’s team in the forthcoming Hockey India League (HIL) season, aiming to lay the foundation for a stronger campaign than last year. A Trailblazer’s Next Chapter
Aged 49, Sofie Gierts is a trailblazer in world hockey. The former Belgian international with 140 caps for the Red Panthers is known for her hands-on coaching style and exceptional communication skills. She made history as the head coach of a men’s team in Belgium’s top division with Royal Uccle, besides guiding Royal Antwerp to a national women’s title.
In India, Gierts will work with Assistant Coach Helen Mary and Analytical Coach Michel Kinnen. She replaces Dave Smolenaars as head coach of the women’s side.
“I Didn’t Have To Think Twice!”
Speaking exclusively to Telecom Asia Sport, Gierts said her decision to join HIL and the Pipers was instinctive.
Auction Success: “The Outcome Is Fantastic”
Gierts was pleased with how the Pipers performed at the mini-auction. “Yes, we prepared very well, did our research thoroughly. It was a team effort, and the outcome is fantastic,” she said.
The Indian core of the squad was already in place, but the availability of international players had been an issue last season.

Blending Global Styles For Success
The SG Pipers women’s team features players from Argentina, Spain, and across Europe, which Gierts sees as an advantage.
“The Spanish and Argentine styles are different from standard European hockey. The good thing is many of these players have also played in Germany, so they’re used to adapting. This adaptability is crucial for HIL, where blending Indian and international styles can make all the difference,” she explained.
Experience Between The Posts: Cosentino Joins The Pipers
Among the Pipers’ key signings is Argentine goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino, who won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. “We needed an experienced goalkeeper — that was a no-brainer,” said Gierts. “Cosentino brings experience and creativity. And with Deepika, one of the best drag-flickers in the world, we now have multiple ways to surprise opponents and score.”
“India Will Always Be Special”
Gierts was visibly touched seeing old photos of herself alongside Indian stars like Rani Rampal, Asunta Lakra, and Helen Mary at the auction.
“It was fantastic. I always say the best thing about my career is that I’ll have a bed on every continent! India is special — the atmosphere, the warmth. I’m sure I’ll leave with more friends after HIL,” she said warmly.
Professionalism And Preparation At The Auction
Reflecting on her first HIL auction, Gierts admitted she was pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t know what to expect — I thought it would be more chaotic! But it was very professional. The reason, of course, is that we had prepared well and had a great team at the table,” she concluded with a smile.
